Common Fragrance Lamp Questions
- How long should I light the stone for?
You only need to light the stone for 2-3 minutes before blowing the flame out. DO NOT attempt to put the decorative crown on a lit lamp.
- How long should I use the lamp for?
For the ultimate home scent experience, we recommend using your lamp for up to 45 minutes at a time. Any longer and this can cause issues with the wick/stone assembly which may have an impact on its ability to light again.
We recommend only using your lamp up to twice a day - with a 30 minute 'reset' between uses. To reset your lamp, simply apply the snuffer cap to re-prime the fragrance before lighting again.
- How often do I need to change my stone / wick assembly?
If your stone and wick assembly is used exclusively with Ashleigh & Burwood Lamp Fragrance and the instructions are followed, then each wick should last for around 250 uses. If, however, you continue to have issues with your lamp not lighting, you can purchase additional large wicks and small wicks on our website.
- Should I leave my lamp filled if I am not going to use it for a long time?
If you know you won't be using your lamp for extended periods, it is best to pour any remaining unused fragrance back into the bottle using the provided funnel - to avoid fragrance evaporation. Leaving fragrance in the lamp when unused for a long time can cause fragrance to build up in the stone, making it difficult to light again.
- Can I use a fragrance lamp with pets present in the house?
Ashleigh & Burwood are passionate about not testing any products on animals but cannot 100% say with certainty how their lamps and lamp fragrance will affect your individual pet. There have been NO reports of any negative impact on cats, dogs and birds in particular. Many customers have cats and dogs and confidently use their lamps in the home with them present, with no adverse issues.
The way Ashleigh & Burwood lamps are designed is that they only require a small percentage of fragrance to give a very powerful scent - a percentage so small that we wouldn't expect there to be any negative impact, however this cannot be claimed with 100% certainty.
The Lamp Fragrance base is made from Isopropyl alcohol and water, which is the main basis for most hand sanitisers - so if your pet is sensitive to this then we would recommend not using these lamps in your home or at the very least, use them in a different room where pets won't be.
- Can I use a fragrance lamp during pregnancy?
There have been NO reports of any untoward effects. However, as these products are not tested on animals or humans, we are unable to claim with certainty how expectant mothers might react to these products – for this reason, we would suggest anyone who is pregnant to check with their healthcare professional prior to using these products.
However, this industry is incredibly strictly governed and certain ingredients are restricted or prohibited to ensure the safety of home fragrance products.
Additionally, Ashleigh & Burwood have added even stricter restrictions and prohibitions themselves which go above and beyond legal requirements. All these measures ensure their products are as safe as can be for all customers to use.
- How much liquid do I put in the lamp?
We suggest filling your lamp so that it is 2/3rds full with fragrance. However, as it can be difficult to determine how full your lamp is due to their design, we suggest using the following amount of liquid if opening a new bottle:
To fill a SMALL lamp:
250ml bottle of fragrance oil - use just over 1/2 of the bottle
500ml bottle of fragrance oil - use approx. 1/3 of the bottle
1000ml bottle of fragrance oil - use approx. 1/6 of the bottle
- Why won’t my stone light, and what can I do to fix it?
Typically, if the stone at the top of your lamp doesn't light, it means one of two things - fragrance isn't being delivered efficiently to the stone, or the stone itself has become clogged with fragrance. When not using your lamp, it is important that you cover the stone with the included silver/gold snuffer cap, to ensure the stone doesn't become clogged with fragrance.
If your stone is light grey and won't light, it's likely that fragrance hasn't been delivered to the stone efficiently. Ensure that the wick is submerged in the fragrance and allow at least 30 minutes of 'prime time' with the snuffer cap on the stone before lighting this.
If your stone is dark grey/black in colour but will not light, it's likely that the stone has become clogged with fragrance, most likely because the snuffer cap was not put back on the lamp when not in use.
- Can I use my lamp with a chipped / cracked stone
If your wick/stone becomes damaged, your lamp will not work effectively, so we suggest fitting a new stone/wick assembly before using the lamp again.
Replacement wicks for both small and large lamps can be purchased from our website.
- My lamp produces a large flame but does not smell once I blow it out. What is wrong?
It's likely that the lamp has been blown out too soon before the stone has reached its optimal working temperature. Put the snuffer cap back on the stone and leave for 30 minutes to re-prime. When lighting the stone again, keep it burning for a full 2-3 minutes before blowing it out. If this still does not work, follow our instructions for cleaning your stone.
- Why is the level of fragrance oil going down even when I haven’t used it?
This is most probably because the collar of the stone/wick assembly is not fully inserted into your lamp, and the fragrance is slowly evaporating. This can also happen if the snuffer cap is not fully pushed down to cover the stone.
Replace the stone/wick assembly, ensuring the collar is fully inserted into the neck and the snuffer cap is snugly fitted to the stone and fully pushed down.

Use this method if you have the following issues:
- Your wick won't light
- Your wick won't get hot
- Your wick won't remain lit for 2-4 minutes
- You're not receiving a good fragrance throw
If you're experiencing the above issues, your wick could be blocked.
Step 1: Take your wick out of your lamp and put into a ceramic bowl/cup (be careful
when doing this as your wick will be wet with Lamp Fragrance), ensure the surface
underneath is covered.
Step 2: Pour your Lamp Fragrance into your bowl/cup and fill until 2-3 cm full.
Step 3: Cover with cling film and put into a cool dark place. Leave for 24 hours.
Step 4: Place the wick back into your lamp, bearing in mind the rope part of the wick
will be soaked in Lamp Fragrance, so again be careful with any dripping.
Step 5: Replace the snuffer cap and leave for 10 minutes.
Step 6: After 10 minutes light the wick. Please use caution as initially the flame will be
quite high (up to 3 inches).
Step 7: Use your lamp again as normal!
